Our homestead moves us through the summer months, leading us from berry patch to berry patch. We start off with strawberries . . . move on to raspberries . . . head up to the mountain for blueberries (10 gallons in our freezer!) . . . and back down for tremendous blackberries (the ones the goats haven’t eaten!)
And my secret ingredient – kale. We always have kale on hand and it adds so much nutrition and doesn’t affect the flavor). And what a way to sneak in some greens for the kids.
Great makings for great smoothies!
So here’s my basic recipe – of course, it varies a bit depending on what’s in season.
I love to start my day off with a cup. It gets me through farm chores. And I pack a small thermos of it for my husband to bring to work for a late afternoon snack. It provides him with fuel to run around a bit when he comes home.
In a blender, place:
- 1-2 cups of whatever berries you have on hand.
- 2 bananas
- 2 c. organic plain low fat yogurt
- 1 c. orange juice
- 1 T. sweetened condensed milk (or you could go a little healthier with agave nectar, honey, rice syrup . . . )
- ¼ c. whey protein
- 2 T. ground flax seeds
- 2 kale leaves (yup!)
And lately I’ve been adding some additional goodies to really make a meal of it:
- 2 T of all-natural peanut butter
- 2 T of tahini
Blend it on a high speed until smooth. And then slurp it up.
